This section will provide a summary of the OSHA inspection process and the procedures that should be followed upon arrival of OSHA on-site.
IMMEDIATELTLY UPON INSPECTION:
- Notify your Superintendant/Foreman immediately
- Notify the office of the inspection
- Ask compliance officer <politely> to wait until a company representative can be present (typically around 30-60 minutes)
- If this request is denied, you should plan to accompany the compliance officer yourself
- Ask to see identification from compliance officer
- Ask the purpose of the inspection
- Identify the specific area and/or task of concern
- Ask to be considered for a “Focused Inspection”
DO'S AND DONT'S:
DO:
- Act as a professional and do not argue with the compliance officer
- Accompany the compliance officer at all times
- Take photographs of EVERYTHING the compliance officer photographs
- Immediately correct ANY items noted as possible violations (have someone with you to assist with this)
- Take detailed notes of the inspection:
- Who was interviewed
- Items noted as violations
- Comments made by compliance officer and others
- Act as a professional at all times & answer all questions truthfully
DON’T:
- DON'T allow the compliance officer to walk on site unescorted
- DON’T answer any unasked questions
- DON’T volunteer information
- DON'T argue with the compliance officer
- DON'T become angry
- DON'T admit or discuss your knowledge of a violation - you may exposure the issue as willful violation
- DON'T give them documents that were not requested
- DON'T lie or mislead the compliance officer
- DON'T answer question based on your OPINION (e.g. Do you think this is unsafe?)
