OSHA INSPECTION PROCEDURES

 

This section will provide a summary of the OSHA inspection process and the procedures that should be followed upon arrival of OSHA on-site.

IMMEDIATELTLY UPON INSPECTION:

  • Notify your Superintendant/Foreman immediately
  • Notify the office of the inspection
  • Ask compliance officer <politely> to wait until a company representative can be present (typically around 30-60 minutes)
    • If this request is denied, you should plan to accompany the compliance officer yourself
  • Ask to see identification from compliance officer
  • Ask the purpose of the inspection
    • Identify the specific area and/or task of concern
  • Ask to be considered for a “Focused Inspection”

DO'S  AND  DONT'S:

DO:

  • Act as a professional and do not argue with the compliance officer
  • Accompany the compliance officer at all times
  • Take photographs of EVERYTHING the compliance officer photographs
  • Immediately correct ANY items noted as possible violations (have someone with you to assist with this)
  • Take detailed notes of the inspection:
    • Who was interviewed
    • Items noted as violations
    • Comments made by compliance officer and others
  • Act as a professional at all times & answer all questions truthfully

DON’T:

  • DON'T allow the compliance officer to walk on site unescorted
  • DON’T answer any unasked questions
  • DON’T volunteer information
  • DON'T argue with the compliance officer
  • DON'T become angry
  • DON'T admit or discuss your knowledge of a violation - you may exposure the issue as willful violation
  • DON'T give them documents that were not requested
  • DON'T lie or mislead the compliance officer
  • DON'T answer question based on your OPINION (e.g. Do you think this is unsafe?)
